Barbara's mother married Liu Kam-Tong in 1972 and emmigrated to England. Because of emigration procedures, it wasn't until 1974 when Barbara followed her mother to England. During the 2 year separation from her mother, Barbara wrote many letters.

In 1982 Barbara emmigrated again back to Hong Kong. Once again she was separated from her mother. They kept in contact bij writing letters and sending cassette tapes.
