Rob - you are a great guy and thanks for spending the time to share w/ us about Barbara's past. I was 7yr old when The Legend of Condor Heroes came out, and I loved BY. She played the character super well. And I've often daydream to be an actress acting like BY =) 90% of actors in HK takes so many yr before they can act descently or many yr before given a main role on screen. But it didn't take BY long and she act so professionally! her acting was super cute and I just loved it. Since '83, they've remake condor hero...but the actress sucks (even though she's not new). No one can ever perform that role as well as BY or even close.
Rob, Some people here would like to read Barbara's letters to her family in English. The letters were written in Chinese, I just finished the translation of her last letter.
Since I am not a professional translator, the translation is not 100% accurate. Please feel free to tell me if you think there is a better translation.
When I read her letters on www.barbarayung.net, I tried hard to hold my tears in the eyes. She was such a caring person for her family, but she died so young.

Has anyone seen 'The Rough Ride'? There's a scene where Tony's friend, who has a crush on Barbara's character (Bik Wah), pretends to kill himself with gas unless Bik Wah said she loved him. I wonder if that's where she got the idea.

Barbara was so popular, I could not believe it's ture when I heared that she was past away... Barbara and The Legend of the Condor Heroes were beautiful memories in my childhood, will never be forgotten... I first knew about Barbara when I watched her television series about 15 years ago. It was 5 years ago when I first learnt about her past. I was kinda affected emotionally at that time.
I just came across this site last night and your story seems like it is something only shown on television or the big screen. It has all the elements happiness, sadness and the emotions locked in that moment of time. Also, the life beyond and how you are doing in the present time. Simply amazing and I think it teaches the younger generation an important lesson not to take things for granted. Technology and the Internet for example. Everything at our disposal.
In my opinion, I think all you have done with her is far more than what my partner and I have done for the past 4 years living together. Again, something I take for granted. Thank you so much, the story means a lot to me.
Does Anyone think that Barbara was born again after her death? I mean the rebirth of Barbara. If she is born again then, the words on her grave would become true to all her fans and loved ones "....All the world would be like Heaven if we could have you back again". Very beautiful love story. It's nice to learn that Barbara was able to go against the Chinese social norm of dating strictly chinese peoples--especially in those times anyway and was semi able to handle the criticisms from other peoples although the criticism from her mother was definitely a strain on her.
But suicide is the worst thing ever. When you can't instill a sense of passion for life anymore in that person. It's like a feeling of helplessness for both ends... Been there done that (not suicide or else I wouldnt be here)

Thank you all for your condolences. My father had a wonderful life and achieved many things he and others were proud of. He even got knighted as a appreciation for his immense voluntarily work. The most important thing he did for me and my brothers was that he gave me steady, happy and uncomplicated childhood. Now I writing the stories about Barbara I realize once again how crucial this is in one’s life. It is especially the 56 years of marriage with my mother (they had a relation that lasted 66 years), that was essential for me to develop into what I am today.

I have never heard of the HK Triads. Then again I did not live in HK. Are they like a mob group? Crime, drugs, and prostitution? Scary. I sure hope our Barbara wasn't involved with them. It's not strange you didn't hear of them. I didn't either. Triads are Chinese criminal organisations like Italian Mafia or Japanese Yakuza. Barbara most probably wasn't involved with them, but if you are female and in showbusiness sooner or later you will get involved because they come looking for you. It doesn't matter if this is 2011 or 2100, it seems that organized crime is part of society, especially capitalistic ones.
Are you implying that her sorrow is related to her rape? If it is the case, she would become sort of deranged by that time she was raped. She needed lots of love and counselling since she was very vulnerable. Yet, she was able to continue her filming and quarrelled with her bf just few days before her death So it seems rape is not the case.
On the internet rumors circulate that the real reason for her suicide is that she was raped by 3 triad members 1 week before her death. To teach her a lesson because she had leaked to the press that Adam Cheng had a sexual affair with a minor. Cheng's partner at the time, Lydia Shum, had planned this, since she was actively involved with Hong Kong triads. Shum herself died in 2008 of cancer. Cheng and Shum were living in a apartment above Yung, which is how Yung must have overheard things. Being the then rising star actress, Yung probably couldn't deal with this tragedy and committed suicide. Also, Yung's good friend, Ming Ming Cheng, a famous cosmetics person and Christian, says she's sorry she couldn't find time for Yung when she wanted to meet with Cheng 1 or 2 weeks before her death, although Yung said she wanted to "relieve her sorrow".
Note: HK triads are very much involved in HK entertainment (prostitution,extortion) but this is unknown to general public.

Hi Rob, thank you for posting your past experiences of Barbara and yourself and given us the opportunity to know more in depth about Barbara as her true self rather than the showbiz image that she was portrayed to be. Not until I came across your website, I did not realise the same fate my favourite movie star and I shared/suffered were so similar, the difference being I lived in North England and Barbara in the South. I was shocked that Barbara actually lived the same lifestyle as myself. I can fully comprehend and profoundly feel how Barbara's life used to be as my life was so similar to hers in respect of having to work and live above a fish and chip shop, working every weekend with no choice and having a mother that did not care for me and my elder sister back then. A typical Chinese family. Reading Barbara's past was like re-living my own and I felt every inch of her unhappiness and depression with no-one to confide or help. I still miss her after all these years!
Hello Dan, Others with similar experiences have been telling me their stories. After I finished my stories, this website will be available for the stories from the ones who had a life like Barbara. That way I think visitors get a better view of what that type of life was like. And maybe the stories give some support for the ones who suffered or still are suffering.
Hi Rob, I guess I was pretty shocked to learn about Barbara's life and how she was in fact living so close to me. I never thought that we literally had the same kind of childhood destiny apart from the tragic fact that she left this world at such a young age. I am glad to hear that she at least found happiness with you during her adolescent years in UK although I understand how difficult it must have been for you both to see each other, as my sister also suffered the same fate. Speaking of relationships, I am luckier than Barbara as I met my first true love which is also my last at 17. I have never been happier being with my fiancee of 20 years. Perhaps one day I would like to pay my respects to Barbara at her grave if its easy to get there. Although I do not know Barbara in person & regretfully can never do so, I feel that we have so much in common. Sometimes I do wonder if she is still with us...acknowledging how so many people across the globe still misses her to this day.

Yeah, all the series made throughout have had similarities and differences. Jin Yong himself rewrote and change parts in his own novels also so there are variations depending on which copy of the novel you got, 1950s, 1980s, and 1998. The one with Barbara will always be my favorite!
As title says, the version Barbara played in is quite different from Jin's novel, LOCH. But I am obsessed with the 1983 version, with not very much interests in Jin's novel. So I don't like the novel itself~~~~ Only Barbara is the reason why I liked the 1983 version :P

Hello, every Barbara fan, this afternoon that TV channel played out of the 59 episodes of the Legend of Condor Heroes, to my surprise, it went circled and playing another 1 to 59, without any delay, still 8 hours every day, it is the first time of TV series playing in history. And of course, I still would like to watch it from the 9th episode, because from this episode, Barbara, dressing as a cute beggar, came out the first time. I'd like to say that it's really a huge miracle, i'v never ever seen a TV series could be played in a circle, especilly when it came out nearly 30 years.....
I brought with me the whole set of LOCH VCDs in a huge binder when I came abroad ten years ago. The Chinese custom officer was suspicious seeing it on the X-ray machine, but he seemed to understand it once he saw the title and let me go (maybe he's a fan, too).
What part are you on in the Legend of the Condor Heroes (Called "Anh Hung Xa Dieu" in Vietnamese)?
There are some parts that don't have Barbara in them but they are still quite interesting :). But scenes with Barbara and Felix Wong are the most exciting.
I'm a new barbara fan, I'm only 18 and far younger than most fans, even I became fond of Barbara only 5 days ago, but I don't know how it got so crazy and can't help myself stop thinking of Barbara and her role called "Huang Rong", pure eyes and her smiling facing always imsprint on my mind, think I've already been crazy about her and for these days, I even burst into tears as I see through some articles or videos about her, you know what? There is something that I missed out. I was 14 years old then when Barbara passed away. Through I missed watching Fearless Duo (manage to find the DVD yesterday) but I did like her in the Rough Ride.
No Matter What the character "Wong Yung" in Condor Heroes was the reason that I became her fan. :-)

So, here I'm reading the love story of Barbara. It is sad that she left us 25 years ago at the age of 26.

There are some parts that don't have Barbara in them but they are still quite interesting :). But scenes with Barbara and Felix Wong are the most exciting.

Thanks for this website. Got to know about this site few days ago as I was searching some clip of Legend of the Condor Heroes. So happens at this time the satelite television in Malaysia called Astro is showing the 3 installment of the series.
One leads to the other on the clip searching till I saw the Barbara Yung - Love Story No One Know Clip. Out of curiousity I click on your name and saw the comments on the clips. That was where you posted the web page address.
So, here I'm reading the love story of Barbara. It is sad that she left us 25 years ago at the age of 26.
Reading this stories let us fans understand more of Barbara and yes, you could be right that some roles that she plays in the series does reflect her true self.
