The first time Yung Mei Ling appeared in front of me (a journalist) was on April 27 1982, around nine o'clock in the evening. At that time, me and my photographer were waiting in the lobby of the Hin Lee Center in Causeway Bay for the Miss Hong Kong candidates to finish class. The elevator door opened and two girls who were dressed simply and wore makeup walked out. At first glance, they did not look like girls participating in beauty pageants. However, the petite one among them took the initiative to smile and wave to us, said Hi, and then walked to the department store downstairs in the center, I followed her and took the escalator to the second floor of the basement, intending to conduct an interview. She politely told me that she was number 6 and more information she was not allowed to tell.

During the rehearsals there was often a man sitting in a silver-gray Ford car, drinking a McDonald's drink and waiting for her to finish. This man's surname is Zhang and he works for China Electric Power Company. According to Yung Mei Ling, he was a friend of her god mothers son.  This son introduced them to each other, but they were just ordinary friends. Mr. Zhang only saw her after work.
