Barbara Yung on Fame, Friendship, and the Surprise of a Fan Club
"I can’t believe I actually ended up organizing a fan club. I’m just an ordinary girl, and it’s hard for me to understand why anyone would be a 'fan' of me. Honestly, I never dared to dream of starting a fan club, First, because I don’t feel deserving, and second, because I’m afraid people might misunderstand it as me being 'full of myself. A newcomer like me, trying to act like an idol?
But the young girls who like me are truly passionate. They’re willing to wait outside the TV station for hours just to catch a glimpse of me and ask for an autograph. They even carefully cut out all my photos from magazines and neatly paste them into albums, creating what feels like a personal archive of my career! They’ll stay up until midnight just to call me after I finish work to say how much they enjoyed my performance in that night’s drama. Over the past year, through letters, meet-ups, and phone calls, I’ve developed a bond with them. Gradually, I stopped seeing them as fans and instead as new friends who know and appreciate me.
In the end, I was moved by their enthusiasm and agreed to organize a fan club. Still, I never want them to see me as some kind of idol—I just want to be their good friend, holding a few gatherings each year to have fun together."
About signing a five-year contract with TVB, many friends were shocked and said, 'Are you serious?'
It’s true five years is a long time, and I did think carefully about it. But since the company offered good terms and approached me first, it would’ve been hard to refuse. So I signed without hesitation, ready to spend another vibrant five years in television.
Actually, I’ve been longing to make movies for a while, and several producers have approached me. But the company turned them all down—partly out of concern for scheduling conflicts, and partly to carefully select scripts that wouldn’t harm my image. I agree with their reasoning, so I’ve been patiently 'waiting' for the right opportunity."
