Barbara Yung: Fear of "Challenge" and Emotional Struggles
Exclusive Contract? No Worries for Her!
Recently, seven out of ten TVB artists have been troubled over whether to renew their long-term contracts. However, Barbara Yung is an exception.
"Why haven’t we heard you worrying about this issue?"
Barbara: *"Ah, don’t you remember? Before I was cast as 'Huang Rong' in 1983, I had already signed a five-year contract with the company. Actually, I might have been the first artist to sign under TVB’s five-year contract system."*
After signing in 1983, Barbara was immediately cast as "Huang Rong" in The Legend of the Condor Heroes, and her career skyrocketed. By 1984, TVB was so pleased with her performance that they offered her a new five-year contract with much better terms.
"Did you think carefully before signing such a long contract?"
Barbara: "Of course I considered it, but not too deeply. My situation was different from artists like Kent Tong (阿湯) or Miu Kiu-wai (阿苗), who had to work their way up from training classes. I had just returned from the UK, acting was just an interest for me. Even if my career didn’t take off, I wasn’t worried about survival. With my university degree, finding another job wouldn’t be a problem. So, I signed quickly."
A Year of Low Spirits
Despite TVB’s confidence in her, Barbara felt she had accomplished nothing in 1984.
"In 1984, I felt like I had no achievements. I became very quiet."
"What caused this?"
Barbara: "I’m a very emotional person. That year, my mood was extremely low, and I completely lacked motivation to work."
"Was it because of rising star Maggie Cheung (張曼玉)?"
Barbara: "No, not at all. It was my own emotions and other personal factors. But in 1985, I won’t be like that anymore—I’ll work hard this year!"
Fear of Fading Popularity?
"Are you afraid of losing popularity in the coming years?"
Barbara: "Of course I’m afraid! That’s why I’ll keep pushing myself."
New Challenges: Filming "Challenge"
Currently, Barbara is busy filming her second modern drama, Challenge.
"This time, filming a contemporary series puts pressure on me. I’ve done so many period dramas that I wanted a different role. But in Challenge, I play a female CID officer, and I’m not confident I can pull it off—I don’t think I’m tough enough."

翁美玲专访：畏惧《挑战》与情绪低谷
长约烦恼？她毫无压力！
最近，无线电视台（TVB）十位艺人中有七位都在为是否续签长约而烦恼，但翁美玲却是个例外。
“为什么从没听说你为此事发愁？”
翁美玲：“啊，你不记得了吗？1983年我获选演‘黄蓉’之前，就已经和公司签了五年合约。嗯……其实公司推行五年合约制，我可能是第一个签的。”
1983年签约后，翁美玲立刻被安排出演《射雕英雄传》中的“黄蓉”，从此一炮而红。到了1984年，TVB对她的表现非常满意，主动提出更换一份条件更优厚的五年合约。
“当初签五年长约时，你有仔细考虑过吗？”
翁美玲：“当然想过，但不算太纠结。我觉得自己和其他艺人，比如阿汤（汤镇业）、阿苗（苗侨伟）他们不一样。他们从训练班熬了一年才出头，还要一步步往上爬，所以每走一步都得谨慎。而我刚从英国回来，演戏只是兴趣。就算签了合约后发展不顺，我也不担心生计问题，毕竟有大学文凭，找工作不难，所以很快就决定签约了。”
低潮的一年
尽管TVB看好她，翁美玲却觉得自己在1984年毫无建树。
“1984年，我好像没什么表现，整个人都很沉寂。”
“是什么原因？”
翁美玲：“我是个极度情绪化的人。那一年，我情绪非常低落，完全提不起劲工作。”
“是因为竞争对手张曼玉吗？”
翁美玲：“不，和她完全无关。是我自己的情绪问题，还有其他因素。但到了1985年，我不会再这样了——今年我会全力投入工作！”
害怕过气？
“你担心未来几年人气下滑吗？”
翁美玲：“当然怕啊！所以我会继续努力。”
新挑战：拍摄《挑战》
目前，翁美玲正忙于拍摄她的第二部时装剧《挑战》。
“这次拍时装剧让我有压力。之前演了太多古装剧，有点腻了，所以想尝试不同的角色。但在《挑战》里，我演一个女警探，总觉得自己不够硬朗，担心演不好。”
“阿翁，作为演员，最重要的是相信自己啊！”
