Nostalgia for Pretty Wong Yung
Thirty-seven years ago today (May 14), when I was a primary school student, I was about to go to the toilet when I met Lee, the student I usually talked to, in the corridor. The first thing he said to me was, "Weng Mei-ling is dead!" This student, who always likes to talk about the formation of black holes and the characteristics of the nine planets, actually made an exception to talk about celebrity news, which shows how shocking Weng Mei-ling's death was. I was so stunned by the news that I forgot whether I had gone to the toilet or not, but I will always remember the moment when Lee said, "Weng Mei-ling is dead".
Just like Tsang Kong's Wong Yak-shek, the role of Wong Yung is also the most popular among all the versions of The Eagle, whether it be Michelle, Zhu Yin or Zhou Xun, I don't think any of them are as good as Wong. After reading some old newspaper clippings and the memoirs of her Dutch boyfriend on the Internet in recent years, I realised that she was indeed Huang Rong in disguise - not only was she intelligent, but she was also a natural lover.
After her death in 1985, a journalist interviewed her stepfather, Liao Kam-tong, who ran a fish and chip shop in the UK. Liao recalled that she was born and raised in Hong Kong, and that after her father died early and her mother remarried him, she came to live with him in England in 1974 (when she was about 14 or 15). Liao said that as a young girl, she was mature, intelligent and smart, so he always treated her like his own child.
At the time, Liao was running a take-away shop in Essex and he was responsible for the kitchen work. One day when he was ill, he planned to close down for the day, but Weng Mei Ling volunteered to be the 'chef' for the day. Liao was initially worried that she wouldn't be able to do it, as she had never worked in a kitchen before, but to her surprise, she had already memorised the procedures she had read in the past, and she ended up doing everything in an orderly manner, making no mistakes at all, much to Liao's praise.
Not only was she a good cook, she was also a good accountant. The accounts of the Liao family's shop were all in the hands of this teenage girl. Liao said that she was quick and accurate and never made any mistakes, and that when she was studying in London, she sometimes worked as an accountant for others to earn extra money. She studied textile design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design as an undergraduate.
In 1976, while studying at the Cambridgeshire College of Art and Technology, she met a Dutch boy, Rob Radboud, and began a five-year relationship. When he first met her, Rob was a little surprised that the dark-haired, Chinese-faced girl spoke English with a typical London accent. Not forgetting that she grew up in Hong Kong, not in London, she had a talent for languages.
No matter what she learns, she seems to be able to do it all. In 1978, she was studying alone in London and Rob was studying medicine at a university in Norwich, and the two were separated, meeting only briefly on Sunday afternoons in Cambridge and parting in the evening. One night, she was so depressed that she committed suicide by drugging herself.
She told Rob afterwards, in a plaintive tone, that she had taken a whole bottle of sleeping pills, but soon regretted it and kept banging her fists against the wall. Fortunately het neigbour was a nurse and knew how to give first aid and took her to the hospital to have her stomach pumped. That's how she survived. Unfortunately, seven years later, her luck had run out.
The difference is that Wong reluctantly allows the couple to marry, while Weng's mother cannot accept her daughter's marriage to a foreigner. The overlap of destinies makes Weng Mei Ling the perfect choice to play Wong Yung.
What became of Rob Radboud? According to his blog, he decided to return to the Netherlands in 1981, when his future was uncertain and his income unstable, while Weng Mei-ling could not leave her mother, and her livelihood would be in question if she went to the Netherlands with her. After careful consideration, they decided to part ways and Rob returned home to continue his studies at university, where he was offered a teaching position a few years later and fell in love with a Dutch girl, M. In his middle age, Rob joined the social world.
In his middle age, Rob is able to earn a living in society, and is no longer the poor boy he was when he broke up with Weng Meiling. He had several daughters with M. He bought a beautiful house by the lake, with a large old tree garden, a small orchard, a vegetable garden and a small paddock. After turning fifty, Rob, who has lost a lot of his hair, works part-time as a manager and plays sports in his spare time. His daughters had a carefree childhood.
Looking back, Rob says that the life he is leading is exactly what Weng Mei Ling and he used to dream of, but it is a pity that the paths they have chosen are so different. When I read his words, I couldn't help but sigh for the starry-eyed Weng Mei-ling. A single thought is a difference between two lives. Perhaps, in some parallel universe, she changed her choice and did not return to Hong Kong, but now she is in the courtyard of her house by the lake, under the old trees, letting the sunlight from the leaves fall on her face as she ages gracefully and carefree.
