"Is it worth killing yourself four times for two men?

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Ms. Weng Meiling is the 83rd edition of The Legend of the Eagle.
Her role as Huang Rong, the quirky, playful and cute character, is still the most beautiful Huang Rong in people's minds today.
The life of "The Most Beautiful Huang Rong", Weng Meiling, who committed suicide four times for two men, was it worth it?
Many people know that she committed suicide at the age of 26.
But not necessarily that she had tried committing suicide four times in her short 26 years of life.
And God's blessing was one more, two more, three more, but not four more.
Born in Hong Kong in 1959, she was nicknamed Nui Nui and Ah Weng, and her English name was Barbara.
Her father worked in the Customs and Excise Department and her mother, Cheung Ming-yu, was an illegitimate daughter.
At the age of seven, her father died in an accident. She was deprived of her mother and daughter, and her life was once very difficult.
Even under these circumstances, Zhang Mingyu enrolled Weng Mei Ling in the famous Rose Heights School.
Rose Heights School was founded by the church and is the first school in Hong Kong to have a school bus.
Perhaps it was from this period that she first felt insecure.
In fact, not only was she insecure, her mother was insecure too.
With a crippled family, her mother placed too much importance on her and placed too much hope on her, which in turn became a trigger for her rebellious character.
In 1972, in order to make a living with her partner, Cheung Ming-yu married her suitor Liao Kam-tong and emigrated to England with him.
It took two years for her to move to England due to formalities.
When she first arrived in England, she lived with her uncle in Barkingside, north-east London, and later moved to Heathrow, Cambridge.
In 1975, she studied at Cambridge College of Art and Science for two years before enrolling in the textile design course at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
During her matriculation, she met the first man in her life, a Dutch classmate, Rob Radboud.
They soon fell in love, and they couldn't help it.
The following year, at the age of 17, Weng Mei Ling and Rob had a private 'underground wedding'. They had Rob's brother as a witness and exchanged rings without their parents' knowledge.
It looked like a family affair, but it was also very formal.
However, this 'marriage' was strongly opposed by Zhang Mingyu.
Her mother, who had suffered enough from poverty, wanted her to marry a wealthy Chinese son and live a life of peace and security.
Her mother forbade her to date Rob, not even calling him. Her stepfather also shares her mother's position.
The lonelier she is, the more important Rob becomes to her.
After a long fight with her mother, she chose to commit suicide in order to fight for her freedom of love.
She swallowed a large amount of sleeping pills while her mother was out playing cards, but she was found in time to save her life.

Her mother compromised and agreed to let her go out with Rob.
Unbeknownst to her, this 'victory' makes her even more extreme.
Her relationship with Rob was not a smooth one either.
Her extreme insecurity made her nervous and paranoid at times.
On her 19th birthday, Rob threw a party for her, but to her surprise, it was a very sad one.
"From a distance, I saw Mei Ling surrounded by a few girls, crying and sad. As soon as I walked past, her girlfriends left quickly, leaving us alone. It was the first time I had ever seen Mei Ling like that, and I had never seen her like that before. She had always been happy, cheerful, radiant and strong and calm, but now all that was gone, the tears, the timidity, the vulnerability, even the low self-esteem. She told me she saw me with that girl and she thought it was over between us and suddenly she couldn't control her emotions."
When Rob was alone, talking and playing with other girls, there was a lot of thinking going on in her mind.
Not to mention the fact that they had to split up for school.
One night, Weng Mei Ling called her boyfriend and asked him if he could come over immediately as she had something to say, Rob heard something strange and took the train to her the next morning.
When he arrived, he found out that she had committed suicide again.
"She told me that she had been feeling very unhappy and lonely for the past few weeks. She didn't want to live like this and last Tuesday she was so depressed that she took a whole bottle of sleeping pills. But she soon began to regret it and kept banging her fist against the wall. Her roommate next door, a German girl whom Mei Ling had met a few times before, came over as soon as she heard the noise. Luckily, she was a nurse and knew what to do. Mei Ling was taken to the hospital to have her stomach pumped."
This was her second blessing from God.
Such love and pain made it very difficult for the two of them.
Weng Mei Ling even tried to keep her love alive by having a baby.
One month, when her sister-in-law did not come, she thought she was pregnant and was overjoyed.
The next month, however, her aunt came again. This made her very depressed for a while.
In 1981, the couple broke up after a long and torturous relationship.
She moved to Hong Kong to start a new life.
After her death, Rob set up a memorial website in 2012.
Much of what happened before was revealed on the website.
Weng Meiling lived in England, but she did not like it.
Especially after her bad relationship with Rob.
In 1980, she took part in the Miss London Chinatown pageant.
She was very unhappy and felt it was unfair that she came second.
She was upset and felt it was unfair because only the first prize winner could return to Hong Kong, and that was what she wanted.
The reason she did not win first place was because she could not speak Chinese and was unable to attend the conference in Hong Kong.
In 1982, she had the opportunity to return to Hong Kong.
There, she took part in another beauty pageant: the Miss Hong Kong Pageant.
She had a strong sense of stage presence and was confident in every aspect of the pageant, but in the end she only came 8th.
Her height was only 159cm, far from her long legs.
Even though she did not place well, she won a contract with TVB.

Weng Mei Ling was selected from 3,000 applicants and was given the nod of approval by Jin Yong.

She couldn't let go and wanted to marry Tong. She wanted to marry Tang, but he had already left her.
In front of the media, they are still in love, but as soon as the cameras go off, they are no longer together.
Weng Mei Ling became more and more depressed, lonely and depressed, and had no alternative but to go to a disco.
It was there that she met Anita Mui's boyfriend at the time, Chow Sai Lung.

Zou Shilong heard what was going on and ran to Weng Meiling's house, climbing through the window to save her.

In the early hours of May 14, 1985, she killed herself at the age of 26.
Behind her, she left only one sentence: "Darling, I love you.
Some say that she was still in love with Tong until her death.
Others say that her unhappy relationship with Tong reminded her of Rob again.
Others say that this Darling is not specific, but perhaps the whole world.
A few days later, at the funeral pyre of Weng Mei-ling, Tang sent an elegiac message: "Dear Mei-ling, I love you forever.
He brushed her hair and then broke the comb in half, placing one half beside her and leaving the other half beside him.
It was a ritual for the couple to say goodbye to each other.
On 19 May, the funeral service was held at the Kowloon World Funeral Parlour. The funeral was attended by eight members of TVB, including Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Wong Yat Wah, Miu Kiu Wai, Siu Sing, Lee Tim Sing, Ng Yun Chuen and Ho Ka Luen.
The departure of the most popular actress and scriptwriter-director-producer was a great blow to TVB.
On 28th May, the ashes of Ms Weng Mei Ling were returned to the UK and a memorial service was held at a Catholic church in Cambridge.
On 3 June, the ashes were interred at Cambridge New Market Catholic Cemetery in Cambridge University Town.
On January 17, 2017, the mother of the two women, Ming-Ru Chang, died in the UK after a long illness and was buried with her.

The inscription on the tombstone reads: "Without your family your home would be lonely and our lives would be changed, if you were to return to us the whole world would be a paradise!

一說起翁美玲，大家首先想到的是83版《射鵰英雄傳》。
她所扮演的黃蓉，古靈精怪，俏皮可愛，時至今日，仍然是人們心目中的「最美黃蓉」。
很多人都知道翁美玲是自殺的，終年26歲。
但是不一定知道她短短26年的生命里，曾接連自殺過4次。
而上天的眷顧，終究是再一、再二、再三，沒有再四。
翁美玲1959年出生於香港，小名囡囡、阿翁，英文名Barbara。
她的父親在海關工作，母親張明如是外室，名不正言不順，嚴格來說，翁美玲其實算私生女。
七歲時，父親意外去世。母女失去依靠，生活一度十分窘迫。
即便是在這樣的狀況下，張明如還是讓翁美玲上了著名的玫瑰崗學校。
玫瑰崗學校由教會創辦，幼小中一貫制教學，是全港第一家有開通校車的學校。

也許，翁美玲的沒有安全感，最早就來自於這一時期。
其實不光她沒安全感，她的母親同樣也沒有安全感。
殘缺的家庭，讓母親把翁美玲看得太重，寄託的希望也太高，反而成為她叛逆性格的誘因。
1972年，為了搭夥過日子，張明如嫁給追求者廖錦堂，並隨其移民到英國生活。
翁美玲因手續問題，拖了兩年才轉過去。
剛到英國時，翁美玲隨舅舅居住在倫敦東北部的巴金賽德，後來全家搬家居住在劍橋的希斯頓。
1975年開始，在劍橋藝術科學學院讀了兩年藝術本科預科課程，然後考上中央聖馬丁藝術與設計學院紡織設計專業。
預科期間，翁美玲遇到了她生命中的第一個男人——荷蘭籍同學羅泊·萊德鮑（Rob Radboud）。
很快，他們相愛了，愛到無法自拔。
第二年，17歲的翁美玲私自與Rob舉行了「地下婚禮」。二人瞞著父母，找Rob的哥哥作證，還交換了戒指。
看起來，既像過家家，又很正式的樣子。
然而這段「婚姻」遭到了張明如的強烈反對。
母親受夠了貧窮困頓的苦，希望她將來能嫁個華裔富家子弟，過衣食無憂的生活。
母親禁止翁美玲與Rob交往，連電話都不能打。繼父也與母親保持相同立場。
翁美玲瞬間覺得自己又成了孤孤單單一個人，越孤單，Rob對她就越重要。
為了爭取愛情自由，在與母親長期吵架之後，她選擇了自殺。
她趁母親在外打牌，吞下大量安眠藥，好在被母親及時發現，才撿回一條命來。
這是上天對她的第一次眷顧。
也許，翁美玲並不想死，她只是以這樣極端的方式，爭取她想要的東西。
母親妥協了，同意讓她和Rob交往。
殊不知，這樣的「勝利」讓翁美玲更加極端。
她和Rob的交往，也不是一帆風順的。
極度缺乏安全感，讓她時時緊張而多疑。
翁美玲19歲生日時，Rob為她舉行了一個派對，沒想到，這個派對卻讓她很難過。
「遠遠地我看到美玲被幾個女孩圍著，哭得很傷心。我一走過去，她的女朋友們都很快離開，只剩我們倆。這是我第一次見美玲這樣，我從沒親眼見過她這樣。她以前都是很高高興興，開開心心，散發光芒而且堅強冷靜，現在這所有的一切都消失了，眼淚、膽怯、脆弱，甚至自卑。她告訴我她看到我與那個女孩，她以為我們之間完了，突然地就控制不住情緒了。」
Rob單獨與別的女孩說話玩樂，翁美玲就會在心裡想很多。
更別說，後來他們因為上學，還要兩地分開。
某天晚上，翁美玲給男友打電話，問她能否馬上過來，她有話要說。Rob聽出了異樣，第二天一早，就坐火車去找她。
到了以後才知道，翁美玲又自殺了。
她告訴我這幾周她感到很不開心，很孤獨。她不想過這樣的日子，上周二她情緒很低落，她服食了一整瓶的安眠藥。但很快就開始後悔，不停地用拳頭擊牆。她隔壁的室友，一個德國女孩，美玲之前和她見過幾次面，聽到聲音後立刻趕了過來。很幸運，她是個護士，知道如何處理。美玲被送到醫院洗胃。
這是上天對她的第二次眷顧。
如此的相愛而又痛苦，讓二人走得很艱難。
翁美玲甚至想用生孩子的方式，留住愛情。
有一個月，翁美玲的大姨沒有來，她以為是自己懷孕了，高興得跟什麼似的。
可是到了下個月，大姨又來了。這讓她一度非常抑鬱。
1981年，不堪長期折磨的二人，最終還是分了手。
翁美玲轉戰香港，開始新的人生。
在她去世之後，Rob於2012年建起紀念網站。
前邊的很多事，都是從網站中披露出來的。

翁美玲住在英國，但她並不喜歡英國。
尤其是與Rob關係不好之後。
1980年時，翁美玲就參加了倫敦華埠小姐選舉。
翁美玲得了第二名，她很不開心，也覺得很不公平。
因為只有第一名才有機會回香港，她想要的就是這個機會。
沒得第一名的原因，據說是因為她不會說漢語，無法參加在香港舉行的會議。
1982年，翁美玲有機會回香港了。
在那裡，她又參加了一次選美大賽：香港小姐競選。
她的舞台感很強，每一個環節都應對自如，信心滿滿，最終只得了第八名。
因為她的身高只有159cm，離大長腿還差得遠。
儘管名次不理想，還是為她贏得了與無線簽約的機會。
從此，走上短暫而又璀璨的明星之路。
當年底，翁美玲參加了她人生當中的第三次選舉。
無線電視台籌拍《射鵰英雄傳》，公開徵集「理想黃蓉」。
翁美玲從3000人中脫穎而出，受到金庸的點頭認可。
第二年，正式開拍，然後，翁美玲一舉火遍兩岸三地，乃至全世界。
有華人的地方，就有金庸小說，有金庸小說的地方，就有翁美玲。
翁美玲的地位有多高呢，從這部電視劇中的其他演員就能看得出來。
這些後來的影帝影后們，當時都才剛剛出道打醬油，而翁美玲一飛沖天，讓他們望塵莫及。
不過，對翁美玲來說，最重要的是遇到了湯鎮業。
這是另一個讓她為愛赴死的男人。
那時候，湯鎮業長得很帥，也因在金庸劇中演了虛竹、霍都等角色，小有名氣。
二人很快以情侶身份公開亮相，時時秀恩愛。
然而身為演員，又有很多時候不由自主。比如聚少離多，比較與別的異性扮演情侶。
1984年，由於無法接受男友湯鎮業與鍾楚紅在電影《窺情》中的大尺度表演，翁美玲一氣之下拍了一組性感寫真登在雜誌上。
二人為此大吵一架，關係嚴重惡化。
湯鎮業搬離翁美玲住處，翁美玲傷心難過，又自殺了。
所幸的是，有朋友前去找她玩，恰巧發現，把她送進了醫院。
這是上天對她的第三次眷顧，也是最後一次。
出院之後，翁美玲選擇暫時離開香港，去了新加坡。
在那裡，她求得一枚簽，上面寫道：情海無舟，緣盡十八。
翁美玲不知道什麼意思，但感覺並不好。
後來有人推算，是這段戀情持續的18個月。
她放不開手，想要跟湯鎮業結婚。可湯鎮業早已疏遠了她。
面對媒體，他們還是恩愛情侶，鏡頭一過，又形同路人。
翁美玲變得越來越頹廢、孤單、抑鬱，無以排遣，只好去迪廳瘋狂。
在那裡，她認識了當時還是梅艷芳男友的鄒世龍。
鄒世龍瘋狂地追求她，她並不拒絕，也不喜歡。
因為，她只想以此刺激湯鎮業。
可是湯鎮業根本不在乎，不回應，不關心。
已然變成恩斷義絕的架式，並開始與別的女人約會。
這樣的行為，對於極度缺乏安全感、極度缺愛的翁美玲來說，簡直無異于晴天霹靂。
1985年5月13日，湯鎮業與吳君如一起出遊被記者拍到，引起軒然大波，更有好事者專程去採訪翁美玲。
當天夜裡，翁美玲給湯鎮業打電話，湯沒有接。
於是她留言說：如果你不回我，你將永遠聽不到我的聲音。
她苦苦等了一夜，都沒有等到湯鎮業的電話。
天亮以後，她給鄒世龍打了一個電話，說自己活得太苦太累。
然後掛斷電話，打開了煤氣。
鄒世龍聽出了什麼，跑到翁美玲家，爬窗戶進去救她。
可惜，這一次，上天沒有再給她留機會。
1985年5月14日凌晨，翁美玲自殺身亡，卒年26歲。
在她身後，只留了一句話：Darling, I love you。
有人說，她至死還對湯鎮業念念不忘。
也有人說，與湯鎮業的不如意，又讓她想起了Rob。
還有人說，這個Darling並非特指，或許是全世界。

幾天之後，在翁美玲的靈堂上，湯鎮業送上輓聯：親愛的美玲，我永遠深愛你。
並為她梳頭，然後將梳子一掰兩半，一半放在翁美玲身邊，一半留在自己身邊。
這是結髮夫妻永別的禮儀。
5月19日，翁美玲的遺體在九龍世界殯儀館出殯，由無線電視台的劉德華、梁朝偉、黃日華、苗僑偉、蕭笙、李添勝、伍潤泉、何家聯等八人扶靈。
既有當紅小生，又有編劇導演製片人，足以看出，翁美玲的離去，對無線電視台打擊多大。
5月28日，翁美玲的骨灰運返英國，在劍橋一家天主教堂舉行了追悼會。
6月3日，骨灰在英國劍橋大學城劍橋新市場天主教墓地安葬。
2017年1月17日，翁美玲的母親張明如在英國病逝，與翁美玲合葬，這對命運多舛的母女，從此永遠長伴一起。
墓碑的銘文上，有這樣一句話：沒有了你家裡便成孤寂，我們的生活也起了變化，如果你重返我們中間，整個世界將變成天堂！
