"The Eagle-Shooting Heroes" Stars go on Tour – Amusing Anecdotes

Guo Jing and Huang Rong Take the Netherlands by Storm

After filming the 60-episode series The Legend of the Condor Heroes, the show’s leading trio—Felix Wong (Wong Yat-wah), Barbara Yung (Weng Meiling), and Sharon Yeung (Poon Pan-pan)—immediately set off on separate overseas tours. Capitalizing on the drama’s soaring popularity abroad, they seized the opportunity to "strike while the iron was hot" and "search for real silver" (make money).

Poon Pan-pan Surrounded by Adoring Fans

Although The Legend of the Condor Heroes had finished airing in Hong Kong, its VCR tapes were still widely circulated in Southeast Asia, Europe, and America. Sharon Yeung, who played the lovelorn heroine Mu Nianci, was greeted by a swarm of female fans the moment she landed in Singapore. These wealthy young ladies not only welcomed her at the airport but also followed her every move, filming her activities and stage performances with 8mm cameras. They compiled the footage and photos into colorful scrapbooks as keepsakes.

These devoted fans even accompanied Sharon late into the night. On the day of her departure, they stayed with her at the hotel until 3 a.m., originally planning to escort her to the airport. However, there were too many of them to fit in one car, so the manager arranged for them to follow in their own Mercedes-Benz sedans. Thus, Sharon arrived at the airport with an entire "Mercedes convoy"—a far cry from her tragic on-screen character Mu Nianci, who now seemed more like a princess!

The most amusing part? When Sharon made her singing debut at a nightclub, even the dancers stopped entertaining guests and focused entirely on her performance. Touched by her fans’ enthusiasm, she has since been practicing her singing diligently, vowing to put on an even better show next time. Hong Kong fans may soon get to hear her sing, as she might appear on Enjoy Yourself Tonight. In fact, her emotional solo scene mourning Miu Kiu-wai’s character in The Legend of the Condor Heroes was recorded live—a bold move at the time.

Wah Jai, Wah Lui, and Sister Wah

Another pair, Felix Wong and Barbara Yung, set off for Europe a little later after wrapping up The Legend of the Condor Heroes. Their destinations included the Netherlands, London, Paris, and Amsterdam. They were joined by Felix’s rumored girlfriend, Leung Kit-wah ("Wah Lui"), veteran singer Poon Tik-wah ("Sister Wah"), Lau Nga-lai, and the eccentric "Dance King" Mak Tak-lo.

With so many stops, their trip was full of funny incidents. In the Netherlands, the event organizer, fearing disruption by underground gangs, introduced them to a local "godfather" as their guide. Felix expected a towering, intimidating figure with bodyguards—but instead, they met a 5’4" mustached man who was hilariously down-to-earth. This "pocket-sized godfather" not only acted as their chauffeur but also challenged them to a speed-eating contest with big bowls of porridge. Lau Nga-lai won 400 guilders (about HK$1,000+) by finishing hers first, while Felix came in second. Barbara, the weakest eater, only managed half—but the chivalrous godfather finished it for her, letting her claim 200 guilders as a prize!

Rumors swirled that Felix and Leung Kit-wah might soon tie the knot. One night, while dressed up for a show, they were mistaken for newlyweds by a foreigner who toasted them on the theater stairs!

Free Strawberries in England

Since Barbara’s mother lived in England, she naturally became the group’s tour guide. She took them to a strawberry farm where visitors could pick and eat for free—unlike in Hong Kong, where strawberries cost $20 per pound. They went overboard, stuffing themselves until their hands were stained red. Coincidentally, it was Lau Nga-lai’s birthday, so they dressed up in glamorous gowns for photos.
