Barbara Yung: Before and After Her Passing
The Boudoir Remains, But the Beauty is Gone
Not long ago, we visited Barbara Yung’s home for an interview. Little did we know that tragedy would strike so suddenly. These photos became her last set of candid home life images.
Since returning to Hong Kong from the UK in 1982, Barbara (affectionately called "Ah Yung") had been living with her godmother on Tin Kwong Road in Hung Hom. A year ago, her godfather, Chang Chung, sold her a flat in Welcome Gardens, 39 Broadcast Drive (广播道39号伟锦园) in Kowloon Tong (九龙塘) at a low price. For convenience, Barbara moved out of her godmother’s home to become a homeowner and live independently.
I still remember her mentioning "Ah Tong" (Kenny Tong Chun-yip) during our casual chat:
"This long kitchen is just for show, I never cook at home, and I don’t even know how. I can boil instant noodles, but Ah Tong is the one who makes them for me." She praised him for being attentive, often preparing soups and dishes for her.
Her home had an oversized floor-level double bed. Barbara explained that this place was just somewhere for her to sleep, her greatest enjoyment in this house was simply resting.
By chance, I pushed open a wooden panel that looked like a wall but was actually a door, only to find several men’s suits inside. Later, when using her bathroom, I also noticed a razor and other personal items. Out of politeness, I didn’t ask who they belonged to.
Barbara’s home had "two abundances":
First, an abundance of dolls, scattered all over her room and bed. Second, an abundance of photo frames, dozens of them! The frames were filled with pictures of her alone or with Kent Tong. Barbara said these were all gifts from fans, who loved giving her framed photos and magazine clippings. She happily accepted them all, filling her home with these warm tokens of love.
Looking back at these photos now is heartbreaking. Who could have guessed that behind her smile lay so much hidden sorrow?
