Unveiling Barbara Yung’s “Spoiled” Mask

She admits she’s usually lively, a bit mischievous, and loves to act cute—but being spoiled? Not quite.

Being willful and spoiled, yet mischievously adorable—this seems to have become an inseparable part of Barbara Yung’s image ever since she brilliantly portrayed Huang Rong in The Legend of the Condor Heroes. Now, in The New Adventures of Chor Lau Heung: The Bat Legend, she plays Sang Xiaojing, another 任性 (rènxìng, willful) character. But what is she like when she steps out of costume?

Do you think I have youthful energy?” Barbara counters with a question.

Youthful energy and spoiled mischievousness are two different things—why does she conflate them?

Let me explain! Energetic people are usually bouncing around, laughing and cheerful, the picture of optimism. Me? I’m always jumping around, can’t stay still—you could say I’m mischievous, but ‘spoiled’? Not really.” Barbara says seriously.

Sometimes, Barbara enjoys acting a little coquettish—perhaps a natural charm of being a girl. But she clarifies that she never overdoes it, stopping just at the right point.

“Actually, acting cute and being spoiled are easily confused. In my eyes, a little willfulness doesn’t hurt—as long as it’s in moderation.” Barbara laughs.

This idea of “spoiled in moderation” might just be Barbara’s own philosophy. Whether she’s truly spoiled or not, one thing’s for sure: her most authentic performances come when she plays 任性 (willful) and mischievous roles. This likely stems from her active personality.

Don’t let her petite frame fool you—her flexibility rivals that of an Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics. While shooting this photoshoot, Barbara effortlessly performed several difficult poses, holding them perfectly until the photographer clicked the shutter. She clearly has some real skill.

This is what they call ‘true talent hidden in plain sight.’ I could even try more challenging moves.” Barbara says with a proud smile.

It turns out Barbara has a knack for gymnastics. If not for her busy schedule leaving no time to practice, she could be even better. When she learned we be shooting a set of lively, playful photos, she was thrilled.

“This is my real personality.” Here, you get to know the real Barbara Yung.
