The Year of the Monkey has begun appropriately, it seems, for Britain's Chinese with, a suggestion of monkey business in China-town (writes Sue Arnold).
Simultaneously tomorrow evening two beauty competitions are to be held one in London, the other in Birmingham, both culminating in the crowning of Miss China town 1980. Both claim to be nationwide contests and both are offering the winner a prize of £1,000 and a holiday in Hong Kong. Miss Chinatown (Brum branch) is being organised by the Midlands Chinese Association whose vice-president, Steve Yao, owner of the Taiwo takeaway in Malvern, says guardedly that there is no animosity between the two contest organisers. It is only a slight misunderstanding. We had organised ours before we realised there was to be one in London. Then it was too late to change things.' Miss Chinatown (London area) is being sponsored by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, which has held the event twice before.
The 50 London semi-finalists included contestants from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Liverpool, but the 15 finalists some of whom are pictured above-are mainly London-based.

猴年伊始，英国华人社区便上演了一出应景的"猴戏"（苏·阿诺德报道）。
明晚将同时上演两场选美赛事——伦敦与伯明翰赛区将各自加冕1980年度唐人街小姐冠军。两个主办方均宣称这是全国性赛事，优胜者将获得一千英镑奖金及香港度假之旅。
伯明翰赛区由中部华人协会主办，该会副主席、莫尔文镇"台沃"外卖店老板史蒂夫·姚谨慎表示："两个主办方之间并无敌意，只是存在小小误会。我们筹备时并不知道伦敦也在办，等发现时为时已晚。"伦敦赛区则由中华商会赞助，该机构此前已举办过两届赛事。
伦敦赛区五十强选手虽涵盖北爱尔兰、苏格兰和利物浦等地佳丽，但入围决赛的十五人（如图）多数来自伦敦本地。
