Hi Rob,

Barbara's one of my favorite actress and I just could not believe it when she committed suiside when I was young.

I'm touched that you still care about her after so many years and that's why I want to say a few words to you.

I don't know which religon you believe, but according my religon-Buddhism, a person committed suiside would normally end up in hell. This is by no means curse to Barbara or other.

In China we pray for relatives who (normaly parents) died by redeeming them from hell to better places such as Paradise, or even better, Western Paradise.

I am thinking about whether you would like to do the same for her. She will appreciate for your help if you do release her from hell.

Please let me know if there is anything I can help.

Yours sincerely,
Lihua

Hello Lihua,
I am not a religious person. But I can’t imagine that a God will put a kind, friendly, people animal and plant loving, unselfish and only want to do good person as Barbara in hell. Even if she broke religious protocol I am sure God would find a way to forgive her. Thank you for offering but I think Barbara is in heaven already.

I was 15yrs old from HK living in the UK when I watch Legend of Condor. Had a major crush on her, her down to earth demeanor and very proud to learn she had a family in the UK and lived here. Even more prouder that my brother became friend with a relation of hers. Then it came crashing down upon news of her death. Its so tragic to have died so young with all the potential aheda of her. I did'nt handle it very well at that age and just shut myself away from any news about Barbara until today. They made a new Condor Hero drama that I started watching on YT and I couldnt get Barbara out of my mind. Now I know she is buried in Cambridge.

RIP Barb.

Even though we can't change history but I can't stop wondering about what-ifs. From your story, you were surprised when Barbara decided to break up with you for the first time. At that time, you were willing to make efforts to stay together. You made all kinds of suggestions. You said that Barbara was the only reason you stayed in England at that time and your parents were o.k. to let you attend college in England. If you didn't break up for the first time, you would not have made arrangement to go back to Holland. Do you think you could have stayed in England for graduate school and possibly stayed in England to start a family with Barbara? Or you didn't think that far at that time? Or it was never in your plan to stay in England for your life. So unless Barbara moved to Holland with you, there was no way the relationship would work? Thanks!

I was never going to stay in England for my life. The only way we could have continued our relation is if Barbara would have come to Holland with me.

This is the first time I visited this website and I was moved into tears by your love story. May I ask whether you have talked with your parents about Barbara at different stages of your love life? I understand you may not have something in written but if you can write about what they said that would be great.

No I didn't talk with my parents about my love life. Mainly because they were in Holland and I was in England. I didn't want them to get worried about my life.

Just in case you didn't see it, I posted my questions here too.
Quoting Rob R:
Why she wanted to break up with me, her life in England after we broke up. The reason for her suicide attemps and much more. Basically I got the answers to the questions I had for many years.

These are my questions too after reading your story. Would you give brief answers to the above questions on this website or you will give answers in your book? Thanks again for sharing.

Hi Rob and Peter. Very sad news re: Yammie Nam. Yes I remember that competition when Barbara came 2nd. I remember my parents saying that the winner is half Chinese, it's not fair, lol! But I thought she was pretty, who cares. But Barbara was good looking too. The year was definitely 1980 because the England played in the European Championship. The venue where the beauty contest took place was called Talk of the Town, latter became the Hippodrome where I used to dance there. Famous Hong Kong artists also went and performed there, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Carina Lau, Maggie Taunt, Stephanie Lai, to name a few. Good luck with the book, Rob! Hope to see it in the shop soon.

Hello Peter and Paul. How nice to read your memories. I had forgotten the place was called "Talk of the town", thanks for telling me. It was a high class place. When Barbara was practicing there for the contest in 1980 I remember seeing an announcement for the performance of Grace Jones. Unfortunately I found little information about the contest. I assume there were many pictures taken but I only saw the few Barbara's family showed me. Also I found only one newspaper article, in a Singapore newspaper. Paul, Barbara agreed with your parents, she found it not fair that someone who could not speak Chinese won the competition.

Dear Rob:
Thank you for setting up this website for all of Barbara's fans. You have really made us all very happy with all these memories! I found this website because one of my idols, Yammie Nam, passed away last Saturday. Like Barbara, she passed away in tragic circumstances. I have never felt so depressed since Barbara died. I was lucky enough to have met her in 1983 Miss Chinatown at the Hippodrome. I was doing a programme for my Chinese School and my sister presented flowers to a guest. My late father also met her as he worked for a Chinese Newspaper. Of course we didn't know at the time she will become our idol! When she passed away, I was devastated as I was doing my A levels at the time. I hope I can pay respect for Barbara in Cambridge one day. I live in London so definitely will go up there. My favourite part so far is when you talk about the cars you had as I am a petrol head. For £250 you can get a used car-those were the happy days! Very best wishes! Peter

你现在的所作所为是个真正的男人,你当时的所作所为,太冷酷了.太无情了。芭芭拉是带着眼泪离开的这个世界。我们永远怀念她。What you're doing now is a real man. What you were doing at that time was too cold and cruel. Barbara left the world with tears. We will miss her forever.

The reason why Barbara left Hong Kong in early 1982, I think, was that she left Britain sadly because she didn't receive a greeting card at Christmas. Cut off all ties with you. You broke her. You have to admit that you forgot her at the time. You forgot him completely in five years of such intimacy. I'm right about that. Sending a Christmas card is not a way to get involved in other people's lives. I hope that when you write a book, you can honestly write your mind. Only when Barbara left the world did you wake up. Do you think she found happiness? Did you see it? Even if you break up, you should look after her until she really finds happiness. That's what a responsible man should do. You were not in love at that time. It was only when Barbara left the world that he woke you up. The price is too high.

I saw an old magazine article. Barbara said, "the best boyfriend he saw was the one in Hongkong. This is beyond question. ”Because that boyfriend went to see him in England. Christmas is also a blessing. Rob after you break up. You didn't send a Christmas card to her. You forgot her. Even if you break up for some reason. There's no Christmas pardon for Christmas. You made her sad. You had forgotten her.

Hi Rob. Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful sentimental memories of your life with Barbara. You have one amazing memory which I am envious of as I am an absent minded muddle headed wombat. What is your secret in encompassing such a vivid memory? Is it because the time you were with Barbara was special that makes the recollection easier to recalled? My nan and my mum are also a fan of Barbara. I came to like Barbara from watching her shows with my mum. Hope to hear further news on the development of your novel. Wishing you and your family well.

Rob, I looked at story 10 again. You said that in order for Barbara to stay in the UK, he would not return to the Netherlands with his parents. Why did the second break up insist on returning to the Netherlands? I think you didn't care about her at the time. Abandoned her. I think you are too selfish and cruel to do so. You know that barbara so cherishes this feeling so fragile. She must cry for a long time after breaking up. How can you bear to abandon her. Your heart is really hard. Pursue new campus life. Abandon so much to love you so much for you. How can you get down your heart? Too painful.

She was persuaded to join the HK-pageant competition. In HK everybody liked her and gave her many compliments on how beautiful she was. She got invited to parties and went to places where only the rich and famous go. It was an high style life which no young woman can resist. Especially as her life in the UK was not very exciting, she had no lover and her job and social life was not very interesting. In the UK she was a nobody in HK they made her feel special.

Sorry it is a long post. I haven't finished yet. I think that her suicide could have been avoided, because she DID reach out to other people (she called two people) before she died. She wanted to talk. They just didn't get there in time. However, I also think that it would happen again and probably succeed eventually, if she hadn't/wouldn't address the underlying issue. She just didn't love herself enough to keep living. My psychology teacher told me that suicidal thoughts are usually short lived (there is a window timing), if you happen to be there and help this person, they won't do it, but of course it will also happen again like I said if they don't seek help psychologically.
Thank you for sharing your story. Not only it helps her fans to understand the real her, it also help parents and future parents how to bring up their children; never too soft, but never too harsh either :)

BY is part of my childhood. I remember watching her TV series when I was around 10. Her death has always been very tragic to me. After reading your story with her and another fan's analysis of the interviews that she made in HK. I believe that the failing relationship with you was one of the reasons that triggered her death, but it wasn't the underlying issue. Her suicide is due to her upbringing, how she viewed the world, loneliness, failing relationships, and the last but not the least hopelessness (She didn't see that her life would/could get better than this). I also have experience living in the West, and part of my personalities are very similar to hers; very discreet about my personal life. In fact, the way she acted with the social media in HK was exactly like the way she was with her mother, didn't tell anything that might/would shock the public (like living with a bf or having sex before marriage etc). It would ruin her perfect idol image.

Hi Rob, thanks for setting up this website. I am sure Barbara's fans are still fond of her, despite it's been over 30 years since she left us - and I am no exception. Every time I visit this webpage it always gives me the feeling that as if she's still alive. I remain indebted to you. One thing I feel really sorry about is that despite I have been to the UK a few times, the trips were all business related and I was travelling in a group. Therefore I could not make it to Barbara's grave. However, I will definitely visit her grave someday (hopefully within the next 3 to 5 years). I was wondering whether there are any parking spaces available at the cemetery?

Recently, I have been going through some hard times in my life and I am unemployed. Therefore, I’ve got plenty of time staying at home and watching “The Legend of the Condor Heroes”. In early 90s, when I was in primary school, watching that TV series was one of the most fun thing to do during the two months school holiday…….. Anyway, I’d like to thank Rob for creating this website and sharing all the stories and photos. Honestly, after reading her stories, I feel really sad. I used to be an international student too. I went to a new country alone when I was 17. Her stories also bring back memories of the unforgettable times in my own high school and uni life……..Thanks again Rob for all your work and effort.

I haven't kown much about barbara young until I listen to the song from The legend of Condor Hero recently and started noticing her. I was born in 1988, when I was old enough to watch TV,her story was a little bit far from my age... After reading and watching so much reports about her life and death , I felt extremely sad for her dying so young! and I saw so much of myself in her personality. sensitive, extreme, sacrifice to love..what life will be like if she insisted on robert? will robert not leave her if he knew how reassuringly and miserably she lived? As a girl I guess she loved robert more and I assume she thought a lot about the time spending with robert. after 30 years of her death, robert chose a way to remember her which is very touching ! I wish god could give her a chance to build a family like all the other people do..

It's been already 30 years ago that Barbara had left us. Dad told us about her sudden, shocking death at the time. RIP Barbara.

ROB. I know WESTERNERS allow their kids to follow their hearts. But if the kid make serious/irrevocable mistakes, it may RUIN their life.

Isn't it painful as parent to see your KIDs making severe mistakes?

In CHINESE culture, we "steer" & "encourage" our kids to take the right path. Ie. APPLYING WISDOM in their daily life.

One Youtube video says she took her life due to her new career and ups and downs of her popularity in the entertainment industry. It also says that they found a slit on the forehead and a puncture mark on the arm. It is not from a bad relationship.

She felt lonely, unappreciated and unwanted. She also had an enormous argument with her mother a few days before.

I think you misunderstood the situation. Her problems were much more complex than just the one single cause you mentioned here.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for doing that. I have few questions;
Was Barbara your first girlfriend? If you can have the choice again, would you marry her and kept her in England? Have you dreamed about her all these years? Thanks. J

No she was not my first girlfriend.
I would have married her if she had joined me in Holland. I wasn't going to stay in England for her.
I thought about her a lot, but I have not dreamed about her.

Rob, probably an irrelevant topic. But I would also like to share with you a book that I read 3 years ago. Iris Chang, who was a famous historian wrote the book "Rape of Nanking", committed suicide 10 years ago aged 35. Her mother published 3 years ago a memoir about her and gave more details about her daughter's suicide. As you are writing the book (not about Barbara, but more about the handling of suicide problem), I recommend this book to you.

Thank you, I have a look at it. Suicide is obviously a theme in my book. To get some background information I read the books "The bell jar"by Sylvia Plath and "the virgin suicides" by Jeffrey Eugenides. I also had several interviews with a Chinese woman who survived two suicide attemps.

I finished reading the book about Iris Chang. The book is absorbing to read. It tells a lot about what kind of person Iris was but it says very little about her emotional state and why she committed suicide. Which is a pity as that would make her story much more valuable.

I think that there was no space at the graveyard in Histon. Being buried in Cambridge was just a practical solution. I don't think she called her mother, she didn't share her problems with her mother.

You seem to be really brought up by "Dutch Parenting". I mean very open minded family atmosphere. Just now as a father of 3 girls, what will you do if you are confronted with the situation that Barbara's mother had? I mean if your girl went out with boys that you don't really appreciate? (I guess the chance is low, since I imagine you are open minded as well). but still a question that we might could learn more from your answer.

Like most modern parents we brought up our daughters that they are independent and make their own choices. In other words that they follow their heart. Even if they make wrong choices from my point of view. If they fall in love with "bad" guys, they have to find out the consequences themselves and learn from it (I hope). Whatever choices they make, as a parent I will support them.

Dank U wel voor jouw antwoord. Wen you found out the first time Barbara had the suicide tendancy, except being astonished, did you seek advice from your parents? Or share with them your astonishment?

Je kan dus ook Nederlands! I was suprised as I never saw it coming. But I was also naïve and I just believed Barbara when she told me that everything would be ok. My parents knew about it, but never adviced me, I never asked them.

Hi, rob, I keep thinking about your story. I have one more question. Do you know the reason why Barbara was buried in Cambridge instead of Hinston? Is it possible that her mother realized that Cambridge was the place for her love? Would it possible that Barbara called her mother before suicide?
